Summary
Since the Paris terrorist attacks, the United States have been on high alert for terrorists trying to enter the country. After the announcement that one of the terrorists might have been a Syrian refugee entering France, Thirty-one governors announced that they will oppose letting Syrian refugees into their states. Among the thirty-one are Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Arizona, Michigan, Illinois, Maine, and New Hampshire. All but one of these governors are Republican. Most of the opposing governors reason that the security of the American people is more important than letting refugees into the country. On the flip side, governors who agree to accept refugees say that the refugees are trying to flee from the terrorists and that we should give them a new home.
Although the decision ultimately rests with the federal government, the states can make the process much more difficult. According to a law professor, the "states have no authority to do anything because the question of who should be allowed in this country is one that the Constitution commits to the federal government...but it can refuse to cooperate, which makes things much more difficult."
Questions
If you were the governor of California would you let Syrian refugees enter your state? Why? Do you think the federal government is ultimately going to let Syrian refugees in?

Respecting your fellow man and equal rights for all seems to have an astrix next to it when america talks about taking in refugees of any kind. Immigrants have always faced opposition from citizens in america as we have an image of an immigrant coming to take our jobs and losing everything. Senators are supposed to be the voice of the people so while the senators might have differing opinions it's only natural that this statistic would come about.

ReplyDeleteAs governor, I would because, as a whole, refugees have been openly scapegoated for the actions of very few. Comparing the character of these refugees to ISIS is like comparing all Christians to the KKK. Furthermore, theses refugees are the people who have been hurt by the atrocities of ISIS the most. It would simply be Un-American to to refuse entry to at least some of these people, many of whom's greatest desire is to work and have a peaceful life. Refusing them would run directly contrary to the principles this country was founded on and would reinforce the notion that this country is a nation of immigrants, so long as they are white. Lastly it would be tremendously unfair to the countries that have been hit with most of the burden of accepting them, such as Germany and Austria, while other countries simply look the other way.

ReplyDeleteIf I was the governor of California, I believe that I would help the refugees. It is the duty as a human being to help others in need. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi agrees with and sent a letter to Republicans saying she will not support their bill and says that the Republican bill "slams the door on desperate mothers and children fleeing ISIS's unspeakable violence." If I were the governor, I would open my doors, cautiously. I would help the refugees but keep them under a close eye in order to ensure the safety of my citizens. It is difficult to say how the federal government will vote on refugees. But I believe this decision will not be easy with a Republican House and a Democratic president. I want to be hopeful and say that we will help the refugees but the fears of the citizens and with Republican ruling, it will be difficult to help the refugees.
ReplyDeleteIf I were the governor of California, I would allow Syrian Refugees to come to the state. I agree with the governors who are arguing that they are fleeing from a dangerous situation and need a new safe place to live. I think they should be considered immigrants, and for that reason, I believe that the federal government will agree to let them in.
ReplyDeleteIf I were governor I would allow Syrian refugees into California because Syrian refugees are not to blame on the terrorists attacks. They are actually just trying to escape, but getting caught in the mess. I believe that everyone should be given a chance unless given a reason not to. If this means that our state and country is put at a small risk then I think that would be better than falsely accusing races.
ReplyDeleteIf I were the governor of California I would allow the refugees to come into the state because of the circumstances. The refugees are fleeing from a very dangerous situation and desperately need a safer place to stay. The government just needs an organized system of immigration regulations that will expedite the process in order for it to be successful.

ReplyDeleteAs governor of California, I would allow refugees into the state, but with caution. I understand that the refugees are being grouped with part of the blame and it is unfair, but that doesn't mean that the next terrorist can't be hiding in the shadows of the fleeing people. The United States is a country that offers help to those in need and has been built on the foundation of freedom, and to accept refugees is to uphold those ideals and principles. But like anything else in this world, we must protect and accept with caution and do the appropriate checks that keep the US citizens safe.
ReplyDeleteI think California should allow refugees into our state. As stated before, refugees can not be blamed for the misfortune that has befallen them. They gave up their homes and former lives for the slim chance that they could find safety somewhere else. Denying the this comfort is cruel and goes against the American credo. I can not say whether or not the federal government will allow Syrian refugees in. Advocates of the refugees will have their fair share of opposition from conservatives and modern nativist. However I hope they manage to push through because I believe that offering refuge to the Syrians will be one step closer to achieving the dream the Framers once had.

ReplyDeleteIf I were the governor of California, I would allow refugees into our state. The refugees should not be blamed for the traumatic terrorist attacks. They just want to flee from the chaos back home and are coming to us for help because we offer so many opportunities. They should all be allowed because they could be completely innocent people. I think that they will be considered immigrants and the government will let them in.

ReplyDeleteIf I were the governor of california I would let the refugees in. The refugees are running from exactly what we are trying to fight, and if we don't let them in it will be genocide. That has happened with too many peoples already and we cannot sit idly by and let it happen again.
ReplyDeleteAs governor I would let refugees in. Just because they aren't citizens of the United States doesn't mean that they don't deserve to try and make a better life. They are fleeing for a reason, because their home country isn't safe, and it is not fair of us to not let in all these refugees because one or two terrorists came through. I do think the federal government will let them come through because we are a nation that values human lives and the refugees are suffering.
ReplyDeleteIf I were governor, I would allow Syrian refugees to enter the state because it is nothing in their control that caused the attacks and they need to find a place safe to go. Just because they are not citizens of the US, they deserve to be in a safe place and they are trying to save themselves from the people we have disagreements with as well. We as a country should help those in need from people that are attacking them.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading about the devastation and massacre of the Syrian people by ISIS I would take the odds into consideration. It is so much more likely that as a country, we would help so many families seek refuge from a devastated and corrupt country than it is likely we allow a terrorist into the country by taking in these refugees. It would also aid our relations with the country as a whole as we would be seen as helpers and peaceful people to the Syrian general public rather than the terrorists ISIS has talked us up to be.
ReplyDeleteAs the Governor of California, I believe I would want to at least try to let refugees in. However, I would insist on background checks of sort in order to make sure those who are in do not mean harm to the U.S.. On the subject of whether the government will let in refugees, it is hard to say. With anti-Muslim sentiments how they are, it might be dangerous for refugees to enter the country as it is. The government will have to take this into consideration before deciding anything.
ReplyDeleteAs the governor of California, I would be very hesitant about letting refugees enter due to the security risks they could impose and the challenge of taking care of the refugees. I would ultimately not allow refugees into my state because just from an economic standpoint, the state cannot support tens of thousands of extra people who would have to rely on the state for support. As for the federal government, I do not think that they will allow refugees to enter since there will be a major public backlash and that there is a Republican majority in Congress.
