Summary:
After the recent unfortunate Paris attack where 130 people were left dead, Donald Trump, the republican frontrunner, called for a "total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on".
Trump cited a controversial six-month-old survey from the Center for Security Policy, finding that 1/4th of U.S. Muslim respondents said violence against Americans was 'justified' as a part of global jihad. He also cited that a slim majority of this population "agreed that Muslims in America should have the choice of being governed according to Shariah".
Currently, Trump is calling for all Muslims to be ID'd and is playing on the fears Americans have after the attack on Paris. Furthermore, without evidence of truth, Trump claimed that "thousands" of Muslims were cheering the 9/11 attacks on rooftops in New Jersey. Again, there was no evidence of this and he is making false claims.

Questions:
What do you think of Trump's stance on this issue? Is he doing the right thing by wanting to ID all Muslims? What does his 'call to action' remind you of? What would you do to aid the current turmoil and widespread fear in the U.S. after the current attacks in Paris and San Bernardino if you were in the running to be president?
While foreign relations with the Middle East need to be more secure, I personally believe Donald Trump is going about this issue in the wrong way. That being said, I do agree to some degree, that we should be more concerned about the entrance of immigrants to the United States. The "call to action" is clearly similar to President Bush's response to 9/11. Trump's "war on terror" is going to get him a lot of support in the presidential polls, just like Bush did with 9/11, but I predict that history will repeat itself and our actions in the Middle East would come at a great cost. The only thing I could think of to aid current turmoil would be somehow convince the population ousting the Muslim American population would provide any beneficiary effects.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I do believe that there should be some concern on the immigration of Middle Easterns into the US, Donald Trump's views are harsh and unfair. It is important that as a country we remain calm and diplomatic about this problem and not act irresponsibly. By wanting to ID all Muslims, Trump is recreating history almost like how Hitler acted in WWII against Jews which is irresponsible and undiplomatic. His views and ideas are not progressive nor helpful to this situation.
ReplyDeleteThe only way the USA and Middle East can reconcile our messy relationship is for understanding to permeate through both sides. Trump's campaign is fueled by fear and only throws oil onto the fire. His idea to ID all Muslims is not only impractical but also too extreme. His "call to action" reminds me of every instance where a group is discriminated against with extreme measures, whether it is Russian pogroms or the massacre at Nanjing, the only difference is that Trump is rallying people through psychological means in order to create a long term and lasting hate against Muslims. I can not imagine being in a position of power where I would have to deal with the current terrorist attacks. Obviously they need to be stopped, but rallying against the whole population when only a fraction is to blame is not the answer.
ReplyDeleteTrump wanting to ID all Muslims is to take away the freedoms that the US guarantees. His "call of action" reminds me of WWII, when the Japanese, mainly in California, were sent to live in internment camps because of the fear that Japanese Americans were closely affiliated with the Japanese attacks overseas. This shows that we are not learning from the past and instead are choosing to head down the same path again.
ReplyDeleteTrumps's racism makes it so that his stances on issues affect and target certain religions directly. I do not think that he is doing the right thing by wanting to ID all muslims. Hitler made the Jews wear The Star Of David during World War II which would be similar to this. His call to action reminds me when during World War II when they sent the Japanese to internment camps. I would have to consult with leaders of different countries to see what we should do, and what our best options are as a team.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that Trump's idea to ID Muslims is the right way to address this situation. Trump is a racist, and making these negative comments about Muslims is definitely not the right way to portray our country's idea of freedom and equality. This call to action reminds me of when the Japanese were put into internment camps out of fear that all Japanese were dangerous. Trump is making it sound as if all Muslims are terrorists, which is just not true at all. As for what I would do in this situation is really hard to determine, however I agree with Rose when she says that talking with the leaders of different countries would be a good idea.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Cassis that Trump's Idea to ID all Muslim people is not the most effective way to help the situation the American people are in. Discriminating against a group of people does not illustrate America's freedom and equality for all people. This call to action reminds me of different asian groups being singed out and sent to camps. It was not right then and is still not right now. Target the bad individuals instead of groups of innocent people. I agree with Cassis again when she says to talk to different leaders of countries to cope and improve the country after the Paris and San Bernardino attacks.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Trump is being ridiculous with how he is addressing the current issues. Just because there are a few "bad eggs" doesn't mean the whole group of people have "spoiled". He is discriminating against a group of people that honestly belong in America. America is a country built on immigrants and people looking to start new lives. If Trump really wants to "make America great again" then he should return it to the original state of America and the "American Dream." This "call to action" reminds me of the way Africans were treated in South Africa during the time of apartheid. A time that almost the whole world disapproved of and fought against. If I were ever in a situation with this much power I would attempt to reach out to the leaders of other countries in order to stand together.
