Planned Parenthood Defunded

As of September 29th 2015, the house passed a pro-life bill that allowed states to defund planned parenthood. The House voted 236-193 for the bill, with all Republicans voting for it except 9 members and all Democrats opposing the pro-life measure except for two Democrats. Planned Parenthood faces severe scrutiny after an anti-abortion group released a series of videos it says shows that the nonprofit group is making money off of the sale of fetal tissue, a practice the which the company denies. Five states have revoked taxpayer's funding for Planned Parenthood’s abortion business including UtahArkansasAlabamaNew Hampshire and Louisiana. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said during the debate, “Under this Administration, Washington’s appetite for power is unlimited. We’ve seen this as President Obama and Congressional Democrats want to force the taxpayers to fund Planned Parenthood despite national objections to the sickening videos that have been released. But we can also see it in the way the federal government tries to force states to spend money on organizations they don’t support.” The house is using the information and videos about  harvesting fetus tissue to use as evidence in the controversy and this allowed congress to pass the bill.

Do you think that States should pay for the Planned Parenthood misconduct of supposedly selling aborted fetus body parts? Was it right for the non-profit organization to sell any parts of the aborted fetus if the aborted fetus isn't really alive? Should the evidence be considered if its not technically not verified as true?

  1. I believe that this topic will always be controversial and is hard because the foundation of pro-life or pro-choice is usually because of one's faith. We have the 1st amendment which allows for freedom of religion, but then again there also is supposed to be separation of church and state. I think selling aborted fetus' could be right if it was used for scientific purposes and not solely as a way to make absurd amounts of money, as long as the women receiving the abortion consented and knew what she was consenting to. Because Planned Parenthood is "supposedly" selling fetus body parts, due to the lack of verified evidence, there needs to be much more work done to prove the validity of the accusations before actions are made against the non-profit.

  2. I believe that Planned Parenthood offer many other services than abortions and should still be implemented in the States. Although abortions are a controversial topic I believe that this issue should reflect separation of church and state. I believe that even though some religions may not agree with abortion, it should still be a viable option for those who need it. Having said this, I do not believe it was right for the organization to sell aborted fetus parts. However, this still doesn't change my mind. I believe that States should pay for Planned Parenthood and that it should continue to offer abortions.

  3. Planned Parenthood is, and always will be, a controversial issue. I do not believe that the State should pay for Planned Parenthood's misconduct. My issue with this "misconduct" is how can they sell the fetus's parts if it isn't fully grown yet. Late-term abortions are not legal in most states. If Planned Parenthood were to sell fetus part, they most likely would not be fully grown. But if Planned Parenthood were to sell these parts, it seems only right if they have the mother's consent. These fetus parts could aid in research or even possibly save a life. And as for verifying evidence, I think that there would need to be significant proof for Planned Parenthood to be in real trouble.

  4. The main part of the question is that none of this is confirmed. If none of the evidence being presented isn't verified than we shouldn't even be close to making this a court case. Although the idea of selling body parts on any scale is worth looking into.

  5. Out of a heavily edited video, only several words seem to indicate that body parts were "sold." Again there is no direct evidence of these claims, and it seems that anti-abortion activists have made a huge thing out a routine practice of "voluntary compensation." Furthermore, it can be said that some of the incendiary rhetoric used by these activists and conservative lawmakers contributed to the recent attack on Planned Parenthood.

  6. Like Nick mentioned, there is no proof that these claims are true. I believe that there has to be real proof before we can establish whether Planned Parenthood is actually committing any crime. It should be looked into, and if it's true they should have consent of the mother at the very least.

  7. I believe that states should be able to chose who they want to support. But at the same time, I believe that information should be unbiased when presented to the population. In this case, and anti-abortion group released this video so the material may have been tampered with. In terms of if the company actually was selling any parts of the aborted fetus, I think this is completely wrong and I do not support it. But at the same time, I question if this even was true and not just media trying to influence people's decisions.
